He was found guilty of the murder of two 15-year-old girls in the 1980s in Leicestershire. Both girls were brutally beaten and sexually assaulted before they were strangled. He raped and strangled Lynda Mann in Narborough in November 1983 and killed Dawn Ashworth three years later in 1986. He was caught following a mass screening of 5,000 men using new DNA profiling technology. He is the first man in the UK to be convicted of murder with DNA evidence. During the questioning, he confessed to exposing himself to 1000 women.

He was given a life sentence with a minimum of 30 years. His parole was reviewed multiple times. Pitchfork, now 61, was eventually granted parole on September 1st 2021 and he will remain under supervision for the rest of his life. His release angered many including the families of Dawn Ashworth and Lynda Mann. Many have reported seeing him taking his show at a park near young families.
