When Ted was 20 years old, he worked as a bank teller at the Social-National Bank in Cleveland. His job involved “packaging money to be delivered to Society branches around town. It was a position for a trusted employee.” On the faithful day of 14 July 1969, at the end of his workday, Ted took $215,000 out of a vault in a paper bag and walked out of the bank. This is the equivalent of around $US1.7 million in 2021. The robbery was discovered a few days later as the bank did not operate on weekends. Meanwhile, Ted got on a plane to Washington D.C. and cut off all communications with his girlfriend, his family and everyone he knew.
