On 16th August of 1987, the local police in Yongin, South Korea, received a report accusing Park Soon-ja of fraud. A couple reported that they invested 500 million KRW (450,000 USD) into Park’s company, Odaeyang Trading Co. But when they went to the company to withdraw their money, they were attacked by 13 employees and forced to sign an addendum to forsake their money.

The 13 employees and Park were arrested but released soon after on 25 August 1987. After further investigation, the police found multiple other reports of fraud against Park. Park was accused of swindling 1.4 billion KRW (8.7 million USD) from 220 people. The case got upgraded to a major fraud case. When police started to investigate the allegations, Park and about 80 people fled the area. Police searched the Odaeyang Trading factory, located in Yongin south of Seoul, on Friday, 28th August 1987. The police found 49 men, women and children hiding there. However, they were unable to locate Park.[1][2]
